KATRIBU Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas welcomes, with high expectations, the response of Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Kiko Pangilinan to KOALISYONG MAKABAYAN regarding the coalition’s endorsement of the two for the upcoming May 2022 Elections.
KATRIBU reiterates the endorsement of Makabayan opens opportunities for unity and cooperation for the welfare of Filipinos, including Indigenous Peoples. The sector struggle for self-determination and ancestral lands amid attacks and human rights violations committed by agencies and forces under the current administration.
In their statement, the candidates mentioned their commitment to cooperate with the coalition’s 10-point electoral program. The program includes significant calls and demands of Indigenous Peoples. Having leaders in the government who heed the legitimate calls of Indigenous Peoples is a jump-off point for genuine benefits of the sector.
On January 28, the Koalisyong Makabayan officially announced its endorsement of the Leni-Kiko tandem in the race for the two highest positions in the Philippine government.
With the initial discussion with the two candidates, KATRIBU continues to urge Robredo and Pangilinan to uphold the rights and welfare of our Indigenous Peoples. We challenge the two to consider the particular demands of the sector stated in the Indigenous Peoples’ Agenda. Various Indigenous Peoples’ groups, Civil Society Organizations, and rights advocates lobby the said agenda to local and national candidates for the May 2022 Elections.
